Southland District Profile
The SDHB serves a population of approximately 107,000 (2006 Provisional). 50.4% of the population are women and the average age is 36.3. Like the rest of New Zealand, Southland has an aging population.
The SDHB district is geographically large covering an area of 38,214 km2. The population is evenly split between urban and rural settings. The main centres include Invercargill, Gore, Queenstown, Arrowtown, Mataura, Winton, Bluff, Riverton and Te Anau.

- Since 2001 the Gore District's population has decreased by 351 (-2.8%).
- Since 2001 the Southland District's population has decreased by 276 (-1.0%).
- Since 2001 the Queenstown Lakes District population has risen the fastest of any in New Zealand (+29.2%).
